If you’re in search of some astounding handmade leather goods, hightail it to Tips Western and Custom Saddles in downtown Winnemucca. Here, you can get your hands on some stupefying handmade saddles, custom bedrolls and an extensive inventory of long ranch ropes in nylon, poly, cotton and polyester nylon blends…just to name a few.
A staple in this undeniably western community, owner Ken Tipton learned of the unique trade of leatherworking as a child, and even worked for the other custom saddle-making icon in the state: Elko’s J.M. Capriola Co. After several years spent learning the trade, Ken opened his first shop in 1973 called Nevada Saddlery in Elko. By 1974 he relocated the shop to Golconda, renaming it Tip’s Saddle and Silver, and by 1977 moved the store yet again to Grass Valley, just south of Winnemucca. At this point, he upped his skillset by studying silver engraving, and also began making custom silver pieces. By 1979, Ken and his wife Kathy moved the shop into Winnemucca, renaming the store for the final time to Tip’s Western Wear and Custom Saddles.
Today, the store is a local resource for the working rancher and most certainly a statewide icon, serving up perfectly crafted custom saddles and other leather goods. Ken personally crafts custom leather saddles, along with Manuel Mercado and Jose (Angel) Mercado who have effortlessly created impressive saddles for many, many years. Together, the three artisans have over 100 yeras of leather working experience! Additionally, Tip’s has a complete stock of men’s clothing, along with wallets and other specialty items. And ladies, not to worry. More recently, Tips has added quite the extensive supply of beautiful home goods with kitchen items, household décor and jewelry. We can assure you, you’ll have no problem in enjoying your time in Tip’s as well!
If you’re a tried and true buckaroo, Tip’s should most certainly be on your radar, and if you’re a visitor passing through Winnemucca looking for the perfect gift or iconic Nevada souvenir, add this place to the itinerary immediately.
